Friday 14th February – Windsurf **** - River Orwell – Levington -

Tushingham Lightning 7.8.

After two poor sessions this week I was keen to get a good session in
before we head to the mountains and when Andy Mexome messaged, he was
hoping to foil at Levington this afternoon as the breeze was supposed to
increase by then it was looking good. The day started lovely in Felixstowe
really sunny and as I was in no hurry to head to the Marina I did my
exercises including some lower back ones by Coach Kosak on Youtube who is
really good. The wind was building slowly so I backed a sandwich and headed
off but made a small detour to the beach to sea if there had been any coal
washed up. We collect it for our open fire and pickings have been poor of
late but the recent Storm Ciara has stirred things up and I couldn’t
believe it there was coal everywhere and I got two bags and with the coal
Mag also got this after we managed 35k, that will keep the fire going for
several nights:) It was then onto the Marina where Michael Galbraith had
his new JP 135 foil board on the beach and with the onshore wind looking
fairly light was rigging 7.5. As I had borrowed Andy’s lovely new
Starboard foil board but I was glad to hand it back today as I have never
been on a board that expensive and it scared me too death but a BIG thank
you for being brave enough to lend it to me! It looked a bit marginal for
me to foil and with the wind forecast to increase I didn’t want to rig
8.5 so took a chance with my 7.8. Michael was out and flying straight away
as the wind filled in and, in the end, my 7.8 was good for most of the
session. There was now loads of water in the river as I headed out and was
soon up and flying with some big gusts especially on the corner. I found I
could fly better up river with the tide and got some lovely long flights,
not up to the standard of Michael and Andy but pleasing none the less:) It
was now cloudy and a balmy 9 degrees but you needed gloves but the only
time I feel in during the two hour session was when attempting a gybe to
try and match Andy! In the end there were four foilers out having a good
session on the Orwell and I ended up getting my best mile and hour on a
foil and am getting on well with my old Starboard Formula board so am in no
hurry to upgrade to a dedicated foil board, especially as there are not
many yet at an affordable price!
Storm Denis is hitting the UK this weekend but we have the Grandson
visiting :) but might try for a session at Levington on Monday or Tuesday
before going searching for some snow!
PS – I am looking for a reasonably priced second-hand GT-31, can anyone
help?
